Western Naval Command (WNC) has participated in Exercise Grand African NEMO (Navy’s Exercise for Marine Operations) on Wednesday 4 November 2026, at the WNC Headquarters.
The exercise highlights the importance of inter-agency collaboration and regional partnerships in safeguarding the marine environment and protecting coastal communities' livelihoods. It also sought to assess preparedness and strengthen cooperation between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire in managing transboundary marine pollution incidents.
The exercise brought together several institutions including Ghana Navy, Marine Police, Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Ghana Immigration Service, maritime administrations, oil industry operators and other relevant stakeholders.
The exercise was designed to test bilateral cooperation, assess national and regional oil spill response capabilities, enhance maritime domain awareness and evaluate search and rescue coordination. It also examined the effectiveness of environmental protection measures, spill monitoring systems, incident reporting procedures, and the legal and operational frameworks governing transboundary marine pollution.
The participation of WNC in the exercise underscored the Ghana Navy's commitment to maritime security, environmental protection, and regional cooperation in addressing threats to the maritime domain.
